Loss and Bereavement

Loss is a broader term that refers to any situation in which someone experiences the absence or unavailability of something or someone they value or care about deeply. It can be related to a variety of life circumstances, such as:
  • Loss of a job or financial security.
  • Loss of a romantic relationship through a breakup or divorce. Loss of physical health or abilities due to illness or injury.
  • Loss of a pet, which can be particularly meaningful to many people.
  • Loss of a home or personal possessions due to disasters or other reasons.

Bereavement: Bereavement specifically refers to the grief and mourning process following the death of a loved one. Bereavement often includes feelings of sadness, sorrow, anger, confusion, and a sense of emptiness. The grieving process can be unique to each individual. This is no right or wrong way to grieve.
