Eating disorders is the umbrella term used to describe a set of complex mental health issues which can have a wide range of symptoms and behaviours related to food, eating and being in a body. Eating disorders can have serious consequences to a person’s physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing.
Disordered eating can refer to eating behaviours or patterns that cause distress to an individual or have negative consequences for a person’s health.
Body image issues often, but not always, accompany eating disorders or disordered eating. Body image issues can by themselves be a very painful and debilitating to experience.
Psychotherapy alongside work with a nutritionist or dietician and a doctor will often be involved in the treatment of an eating disorder and disordered eating. While recovery will be possible for many, the return to wellness can take time and patience. The support of family and friends can play a crucial role.
